The high school setting adds an extra layer, because these hallways that were boring twelve hours ago are now a maze of death.

9. Passenger (2026)

A young couple witnesses a gruesome highway accident one night and quickly realizes something followed them home from the crash scene. André Øvredal directs a tight overnight demonic pursuit that doesn’t let up once it gets moving. The film runs from the accident through to sunrise, and Øvredal knows how to use darkness. He proved that with Trollhunter years ago, and his instinct for what lurks just outside the frame serves him well here.

10. Black Box (Flight 298) (2026)

A routine domestic flight turns into a nightmare as inexplicable phenomena terrorize passengers through what feels like the longest night in aviation history. Steven Quale keeps the cabin tight and claustrophobic, and the film’s horror comes from the fact that you can’t just leave. You’re sealed in a metal tube at 35,000 feet, and something is very wrong. 11. The Bay (2026)

Best friends Emma and Lani find themselves trapped on a sinking tour boat in a tiger shark sanctuary during what was supposed to be a fun night out at a Thai destination wedding. When the boat starts taking on water after dark and the nearest shore might as well be on another planet, the single-night structure isn’t a gimmick. It’s survival math.

12. Deep Water (2026)

Passengers on a flight from L.A. to Shanghai crash-land in shark-infested waters and must survive through the night. Renny Harlin keeps the action moving, even if the premise stretches credibility thinner than the fuselage. Aaron Eckhart does solid work as the reluctant leader, and Ben Kingsley shows up doing whatever Ben Kingsley feels like doing, which is always interesting. It’s not art. But as a one-night survival scenario, it does the job.

13. Turbulence (2025)

A married couple’s hot air balloon trip across the Italian Dolomites goes sideways when a mysterious fourth passenger boards. The whole film plays out over one night as tensions escalate thousands of feet in the air with nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. The concept is honestly stronger than the execution, but credit where it’s due: setting a thriller in a hot air balloon basket at night is a genuinely inventive use of the single-night format.

14. Chum (2026)

A newlywed couple’s Mediterranean yacht excursion turns deadly when they’re caught between a predatory shark and a psychopathic killer. The dual threat structure, nature and human evil converging in one sun-to-sun stretch, is an interesting twist on the survival formula. The film doesn’t always pull it off (a 3.0 on TMDB tells its own story), but the premise has teeth. Literally.

15. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

Mary Elizabeth Winstead wakes up in an underground bunker after a car crash. John Goodman says the world above is gone. Is he lying? Here’s what makes this qualify: the bunker has no windows, no sense of time passing, and the atmosphere is one of perpetual midnight. Dan Trachtenberg strips away every external reference point so completely that the film effectively exists in one endless night. You never see daylight. You never feel daylight. Goodman delivers a performance that keeps you guessing whether he’s a savior or a monster, and the claustrophobic dread of that windowless space captures the suffocating quality of the longest night of your life.

16. Pose (2026)

James McAvoy plays a reclusive artist spending a paranoid weekend in a country manor with an ex-lover, an obsessive fan, and a potential muse. The film’s most intense stretch, the psychological unraveling that dominates the runtime, happens across one feverish overnight sequence. McAvoy is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, and the isolation of the house after dark is when the real tension kicks in. The daylight scenes serve as bookends, but the night owns this movie.

A time-loop movie about a wedding where Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti get stuck reliving the same day over and over. The day is a preamble. The night is where decisions actually matter, where they confront what they want and who they are. It’s funny, surprisingly moving, and way smarter than it needed to be.

19. The Darjeeling Limited (2007)

Wes Anderson’s film about three estranged brothers on a train across India covers several days. But I’m not recommending the main film for this list. I’m recommending its short film companion, Hotel Chevalier: Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman in a Paris hotel room, one evening, one complicated history laid bare.
