The brief
Joel Schumacher drags Nicolas Cage through the grimy underbelly of snuff film investigation in this relentlessly bleak thriller that feels like it's trying way too hard to shock you. Cage delivers one of his more restrained performances as a private investigator whose moral compass spins wildly out of control, while Joaquin Phoenix provides solid support as his seedy guide into depravity. The film has a nasty, oppressive atmosphere that never lets up, but the 2+ hour runtime feels punishing rather than immersive, and the whole thing comes off like exploitation disguised as serious filmmaking. Perfect for fans of Se7en who wished it was longer, nastier, and less subtle about its darkness.
The verdict
If you crave dark, uncompromising thrillers about moral decay and can handle a punishing two-hour descent into depravity, this delivers exactly the grimy nastiness it promises. If you prefer tighter pacing or subtlety in your crime films, the bloated runtime and heavy-handed shock tactics will feel like endurance testing rather than entertainment.
