Cars
The brief
Cars feels like Pixar's most conventional effort, trading their usual emotional complexity for a straightforward fish-out-of-water tale that hits every expected beat. Owen Wilson's cocky racer shtick works fine, but it's Paul Newman's gruff old-timer who brings the only real gravitas to this surprisingly long 117-minute ride through small-town Americana. The animation is gorgeous (those desert sunsets!) but the pacing drags whenever the film stops to hammer home its life-lessons-learned messaging. Perfect for kids who love anything with wheels, but adults might find themselves checking the clock more than usual for a Pixar joint.
The verdict
If you have kids who love cars or you're a Pixar completist who can appreciate gorgeous animation and Paul Newman's final voice performance, this is a solid family watch. If you expect Pixar's usual emotional depth and tight pacing, you'll likely find this conventional small-town redemption story drags at nearly two hours.
