ChaO
The brief
Director Yasuhiro Aoki crafts a surprisingly tender romance that feels like Studio Ghibli meets workplace comedy, following a buttoned-up salaryman whose world gets turned upside down by an impulsive mermaid princess. The animation has this warm, lived-in quality that makes the fantastical premise feel grounded, while the culture clash between Stephan's rigid routine and Chao's chaotic energy drives both the humor and emotional beats. It moves at a gentle pace that lets you sink into their odd-couple dynamic without rushing toward big dramatic moments. Perfect for anyone who loved The Shape of Water's interspecies romance or wants something like Your Name but with more focus on domestic comedy than cosmic drama.
The verdict
If you love gentle animated romances with quirky premises and have patience for slow-burn character development, this is a delightful Studio Ghibli-style treat that earns its 84% critics score. If you prefer fast-paced action or need big dramatic stakes to stay engaged, the leisurely domestic comedy approach will likely test your patience.
