Con Air
The brief
Con Air is peak 90s action absurdity, a glorious disaster movie that knows exactly how ridiculous it is and leans into every bonkers moment. Nicolas Cage delivers his trademark unhinged performance as a wrongfully imprisoned good guy stuck on a plane full of scenery-chewing psychopaths, while John Malkovich camps it up as the villain with surgical precision. The whole thing moves at breakneck speed through increasingly preposterous set pieces, maintaining a tone that's somehow both deadly serious and completely tongue-in-cheek. If you love The Rock or Face/Off, this is Jerry Bruckheimer-produced mayhem at its most entertainingly stupid.
The verdict
If you have a high tolerance for beautifully ridiculous 90s action spectacle and enjoy Nicolas Cage at his most unhinged, this is pure popcorn entertainment gold. If you prefer your action movies grounded in reality or can't embrace gleeful absurdity, you'll find this exhaustingly over-the-top and silly.
