The brief
John Woo unleashes peak 90s insanity as Travolta and Cage literally swap faces and then proceed to out-Cage each other in increasingly unhinged performances. The premise is absolutely bonkers but Woo commits fully, turning what could be campy nonsense into a relentless action symphony of slow-motion doves, dual-wielding gunfights, and operatic violence. At nearly two and a half hours, it's excessive in the best possible way, never letting up on either the spectacular set pieces or the psychological mindfuck of watching these two actors essentially play each other. Perfect for anyone who loves when action movies completely abandon reality in service of pure, beautiful chaos.
The verdict
If you love completely unhinged action spectacle where Nicolas Cage and John Travolta swap faces and try to out-crazy each other for over two hours, this is pure adrenaline-fueled madness at its finest. If you prefer grounded stories or can't handle gloriously ridiculous premises taken to operatic extremes, you'll find this exhaustingly absurd.
