The brief

Adam Wingard delivers exactly what the title promises: two enormous monsters beating the absolute hell out of each other in gorgeously lit neon cityscapes. The human subplot feels like mandatory filler between the spectacular kaiju fights, but when Kong swings that axe or Godzilla charges up his atomic breath, none of that matters. It's surprisingly gorgeous to look at, with each punch landing like a building-sized exclamation point, and the sound design will rattle your teeth. Perfect for anyone who thought Pacific Rim needed less plot and more monster punching.

The verdict

If you want spectacular monster mayhem with stunning visuals and couldn't care less about human characters, this delivers pure kaiju entertainment that will rattle your speakers. If you need meaningful plot or character development to stay engaged, you'll be checking your watch during the tedious scenes between the gorgeous giant monster brawls.
