The brief

Robert Rodriguez turns his fake Grindhouse trailer into a gleefully ridiculous revenge romp that knows exactly how stupid it is and leans into every absurd moment. Danny Trejo finally gets his leading man moment, growling through over-the-top action sequences while Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez kick ass alongside him in the most Rodriguez way possible. The whole thing moves like a weaponized B-movie, complete with intentionally cheesy dialogue and cartoonish violence that somehow makes Steven Seagal and Robert De Niro feel like they're in on the joke. Perfect if you loved Planet Terror or want your action movies served with a heavy side of self-aware camp.

The verdict

If you love intentionally campy B-movies with over-the-top violence and self-aware cheese, this is exactly the ridiculous revenge romp you're craving. If you prefer your action movies to take themselves seriously or can't stomach deliberately cartoonish gore, you'll find this whole exercise painfully stupid.
