The brief

This feature-length expansion of the popular isekai anime feels surprisingly cinematic, with fluid animation that makes the most of its theatrical budget during the big action sequences. The story leans heavily into political intrigue around a mysterious queen's power, but never loses sight of Rimuru's core appeal as an overpowered slime who solves problems through genuine kindness and tactical brilliance. The pacing drags a bit in the middle as it juggles new characters and conspiracy plotting, but the emotional payoff around friendship and loyalty hits hard. Perfect for fans of the series who want more world-building, or anyone who enjoyed the hopeful tone of films like Princess Mononoke but with more modern fantasy elements.

The verdict

If you're a fan of the series or enjoy hopeful fantasy anime with gorgeous animation and world-building, this delivers exactly what you want with genuine heart and spectacular action sequences. If you're new to the franchise or prefer tighter pacing over political intrigue, the slow middle act and series-specific elements make this a tough entry point.
