The Currents
The brief
Mumenthaler builds an entire film around the spaces between words, watching Isabel Aimé González Sola's Lina navigate a psychological unraveling so subtle you'll question if anything is actually happening. The pacing moves like drifting underwater, all ambient sound and lingering close-ups that make Buenos Aires feel like a city of ghosts. González Sola does incredible work with almost nothing to work with script-wise, conveying a woman's identity crisis through micro-expressions and the way she holds her shoulders. This is for fans of slow-burn character studies like "Petite Maman" or anyone who thinks most movies explain way too much.
The verdict
If you have the patience for glacial pacing and love films that trust you to read between the lines, this is a hypnotic character study anchored by González Sola's remarkably internal performance. If you need clear plot progression or get restless during long stretches of atmospheric mood-building, you'll find this as tedious as watching paint dry.
