Charlie the Wonderdog
The brief
Charlie the Wonderdog feels like someone fed every kid-and-his-dog movie from the 80s into an AI and asked it to add aliens. Owen Wilson's laid-back charm works perfectly as the superpowered pup, but the story ping-pongs between sci-fi adventure and neighborhood hijinks without ever finding its rhythm. The animation has that glossy DreamWorks-adjacent sheen that looks expensive but somehow feels hollow, especially when the third act devolves into typical save-the-world chaos. If your kids loved The Secret Life of Pets but you wished it had more intergalactic nonsense, this might hit the sweet spot.
The verdict
If you have kids who crave colorful chaos and don't mind plot coherence taking a backseat to Owen Wilson voicing a superpowered dog fighting aliens, this is a perfectly serviceable 95-minute distraction. If you expect animated films to have narrative focus or anything deeper than surface-level entertainment, you'll find this alien dog adventure frustratingly scattershot.
