The Sheep Detectives
The brief
Kyle Balda brings his Minions animation sensibilities to live-action with mixed results in this woolly mystery that's more charming than clever. Hugh Jackman's earnest shepherd anchors the human side while Emma Thompson voices the lead ewe with just the right mix of determination and ovine confusion. The film works best when it leans into its absurd premise, watching sheep bumble through actual detective work, but loses steam whenever it tries to get genuinely suspenseful. Perfect for families who loved Babe and don't mind their mysteries served with a heavy dose of barnyard silliness.
The verdict
If you're looking for family-friendly fun that prioritizes charm and silly animal antics over actual mystery thrills, this delightful barnyard caper delivers exactly what it promises. If you want a genuinely suspenseful whodunit or can't tolerate prolonged stretches of woolly slapstick, you'll find this mystery more baa-ffling than satisfying.
